Wonder which ice cream is the healthiest? Many ice creams have labels that make the ice cream look like it’s almost health food. 10 g of protein! Low sugar! But which ice cream is really the healthiest?
First of all, I am of the belief that if you are going to eat dessert, eat dessert! For real. Don't try to make your ice cream into a health food. It will taste like garbage and it's really not even that healthy anyway.
It’s important to look mainly at the ingredients, not just the numbers. It doesn't matter how much protein, sugar, etc. it has if that food is from bad sources.
Think about it, what’s worse:
So instead of looking at the numbers, look at the ingredients. The best ice cream has the fewest ingredients. And the “realest” ingredients. Cream is good. Milk is cool. A little sugar is fine.
But what the heck is calcium sulfate? Do you have polysorbate 80 in your pantry? How about a side of magnesium hydroxide? Wash it down with a swig of xanthan gum. Hey honey, can you pass me the potassium sorbate?
You get the idea. If you're going to eat ice cream, go for it without any guilt. And look for ingredients that you know should be in ice cream. Like, your grandma’s ice cream. Milk, cream, sugar, chocolate… Real stuff!
A quick side note about guilt. Negative emotions such as guilt are, in my opinion, more harmful to your body than ice cream. So if you are going to eat it, enjoy it guilt free.
I know I did not give any specific recommendations as far as brands. The reason is because the brand I used to love, Breyers, added a bunch of garbage to their recipe. They were the ones who had that commercial of a little boy trying to read the ingredients of a label from another ice cream manufacture. Then he read the label of Breyers and was able to actually pronounce the ingredients. However, I was not able to find a container of Breyers ice cream that only contained natural ingredients. So sad.
Apply the 80-20 rule. 80% of your diet should be really good. And then don’t worry about the 20%. Keep working on getting better in that 80%, and enjoy your little indulgences. You only live once.
