Trust, Permission, Influence
Over the years of running my personal training business I have been fortunate to have affected the lives of hundreds of people. I feel so blessed each time a client has a "breakthrough."
Most of my blog posts are about the actual fundamentals and foundation of fitness, but today I want to write about why personal training works.
Ultimately, personal training works because of trust. The client trusts what the trainer says and follows their recommendations.
If there’s no trust, there are no results. If there are no results, there is no trust.
The trust comes because as a client it’s hard to see the big picture. As the personal trainer, I can easily see with no emotional ties why you are out of shape, how to fix it, and the best path to get you to your goals.
Most clients have only a vague sense of what they actually want when they first begin. It is also partially my job to be able to imagine the final outcome, and what this person must do in order to achieve their goals. This also means I need to know who I need to be to help you get there.
Ultimately, personal training works because of relationship. You can buy an app for $2.99 on the App Store, or better yet, get one for free. But personal training remains necessary because it works way better than an app, and it all starts with trust.
99% of people don't have a knowledge problem. You might not know everything about fitness, but you know enough to get close. What most people need is a practical and systematic way of weaving habits into their lives. Simply stated, they need to start doing what fit people do.
When we're first starting our fitness journeys, we need someone at the top of the hill to help us navigate the obstacles. To know what's important, and what's not really a big deal. Once you're at the top, you've got it by yourself.
It's easier to stay fit than it is to get fit in the first place.
Once you trust your personal trainer, you give him or her permission to influence you. You in effect say, "yes, I know that you can see things from your perspective that I cannot, and I trust you to help me get there."
Thank you, clients, for putting your trust in me. I never take it for granted.
