I have come into contact with many people wanting to get healthy. I find that most people don't have any problems once we start their program. Meaning they jump on board and they really are invested in making changes. Other people start a personal training program and seem to sabotage themselves every step of the way, even though they have a personal trainer helping them.
Just in case you're one of these people, I want to show you how you can achieve your goals after you start your personal training program.
First, The top three reasons why many people don't achieve their goals (and the solutions):
1. They don’t really have a goal. They may have a vague idea of what they want, but they don’t have a clearly defined goal. Make sure you know what you want. Your personal trainer should sit down with you on day one and ask you "what do you want?" If you can't clearly answer that, then this is the first action item before you even begin working out. Once you have your goal, every ounce of your energy should go into achieving that one goal.
2. They don’t know how to reach their goal. Even if you have a clearly defined goal, many people don’t know how to reach it. They’ve never accomplished that goal before, and they probably don’t know enough about exercise and nutrition to make a plan. This is where a good personal trainer comes in. You don't need to know anything about health, fitness, or nutrition. If you tell your trainer what you want, he or she will know what to do to help you get there. Just listen to them and work as hard as you can.
3. They lack motivation. This could include talking yourself out of a workout: “I can do it tomorrow.” But more often it’s more subtle than that. Most people lack the internal understanding to know how hard to push themselves. So they either don’t push hard enough to get the results they want, or they push too hard and injure themselves. Some personal trainers are really nothing more than "accountability partners." Some of my clients fall into this category. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, because you're more likely to show up for a workout if you know you're personal trainer is waiting there for you.
