Here are five basic tips to help you get started on the road to better nutrition.
1. Drink water when you wake up. This is vital since your body loses a lot of fluid while sleeping. Add some lemon or cucumber to make it more refreshing. In the winter you can drink warm water (coffee doesn't count by the way). Speaking of coffee, one way to break free of your addiction is to have a few apples instead.
2. Eat your biggest meal at lunch. After your morning water, the rest of your morning should be a steady ramp-up to a big lunch. Ideally this will consist of a big salad as the main dish.
3. If you're stressed, exercise. Don't eat until you've relaxed a bit. Stress can undermine your weight loss efforts.
4. Eat fruit immediately after exercise. Fruit gets a bad rap because of its high sugar content. But after a bout of intense exercise, this is exactly what your body needs to quickly replenish your glycogen levels. Then within an hour eat another meal that includes a balanced plate.
5. Balance your plate. This can easily be done visually. Half of your plate should be green leafy vegetables. A quarter should be healthy plant-based fats (think avocados, olives, nuts, and, seeds). And a quarter should be protein such as beef, chicken, or fish (there are also some great plant-based protein that can work).
