Everyone’s fitness goals are different. We have different reasons for embarking on a workout program, and we’ll go about reaching our goals in different ways. But we’re all the same in several key areas. We all need a vision to strive towards, a way to get there, and support when we falter.
First, you need a vision. What do you want? Why? Have you ever been to this level of fitness before? Or does this goal represent the best shape of your life? This first phase is what I call the “dreaming phase.” Write down everything you want. Cut out pictures of people who look the way you want to look. Imagine yourself feeling healthy and vibrant.
Step 2 is creating a concrete plan. This is often the hard part for people. Do you know enough about fitness and working out to do this on your own? Do you need to hire a personal trainer? How many days will you train? At what intensity? What should you eat? As much as we would like a “one size fits all” fitness program, everyone is different. Figuring out what you specifically need is crucial. Seek out a good personal trainer if you are stuck.
The all-important 3rd step to success is to surround yourself with people who want to help you succeed. These will be people who are healthy themselves, people who can give you pointers about your lifestyle so that you can continue to make it healthier. Tell your goals to these kinds of people. Try not to talk about your goals to other people who haven’t yet achieved their fitness goals, unless you are confident that they will support you or join you. The key here, though, is to surround yourself with people who think healthy. Join a running club, go to support group meetings, or hire a positive and supportive personal trainer. A good trainer should not be underestimated. They will push you beyond what you can do yourself.
Take these three steps to reach your own unique fitness goals, whether you’re an amateur or world-class athlete.
