Kind of a negative title, I know. But in this post I want to talk about the inevitable "bad days" that you will experience as you embark upon your fitness quest.
Rainy days are coming. No matter how inspired you feel today, there will be dark days on the horizon. This might come in the form of a bad day at work, or maybe you didn't sleep very well last night. And occasionally it will be big catastrophes like the sickness or death of a loved one, or a major accident.
Let's talk a bit about these "bad days."
Let's first get out of the way that the catastrophe, such as the death of a loved one, gets a big pass. You are not to force yourself to work out on these days. Sometimes going on a light run might clear your head, but if your body does not want to do this, don't. The rest of this blog post is about the occasional bad day, where you might think of excuses as to why you should not go to the gym.
With those days, go to the gym. Just go. You don't have to stick to your program 100%. Just go. There's so much value in maintaining consistency. Don't skip a day. Ever. Ever ever.
Now, before you say that I'm being unrealistic and unreasonable, let me tell you what I mean. Because I'm not saying that you should not rest. I'm not saying that you need to go full blast every day. Not at all. If you're having one of those bad days, I recommend that you do something in the direction of your goal. "Something" might include going to the gym, walking on the treadmill for 10 minutes, stretching, taking a shower, and leaving. Not much on the surface, but doing this type of low-key workout does a lot. In fact, it ensures your most valuable asset: momentum.
Breaking momentum is a results killer. There's nothing worse. Think about it like this: don't you know people whose workouts are nothing special, but since they are so consistent they get results?
On your bad days, just go to the gym anyway. Show up and go through the motions if you have to. Then tomorrow you can resume another good day. And your momentum has been sustained. Good luck!
