In this episode, I talk about needing to be very specific in your exercise selection. My answer to a lot of fitness questions is "it depends" because the answer depends on a lot of factors. It's important to get specific.
A few months ago, we had a training for other personal trainers. They asked a lot of great questions, and I realized how often I answered their questions with "it depends."
I always follow up my answer with specifics, such as "if your goal is _____, then maybe you want to do this. However, if your goal is ____, this might work better." So it really does depend on a lot of factors.
I want to encourage you to be true to yourself. Instead of following the latest fitness craze, match your workouts with your own goals.
Why is this important?
Prevent injury and burnout, and also get results. If you workout too far above your level, you're likely to injure yourself. If you are too low, you're not going to get results.
What questions do you have? Ask me on our Facebook page and hopefully I'll be able to answer them on one of the upcoming podcasts.
Core Balance Podcast Episode 35.
What do you think your body would look and feel like if you continue to move like you did when you were a kid, before fitness became about treadmills and calories. There is a better way and now you've found it. Welcome to the Core Balance Podcast with your host Chris Janke-Bueno.
Hello and welcome to the podcast. This is Chris and I want to welcome you today and I'm glad you came today because I'm talking about something that I think is important and I think will benefit you if you are anything like a lot of the clients who ask me questions about their exercise program. So I get a lot of questions like is this a good exercise, is that a good exercise and things like that or what should somebody be eating and they are very general. Now, there are definitely a lot of general principles that I can espouse and I can teach but to a certain extent my favorite answer is it depends. And it was interesting I realized how often I say this when we had a seminar couple of months ago and people were asking questions like well, what about this and this and it was a seminar for trainers. So my answer to a lot of the questions was it depends because I needed more specifics. So I want to encourage you to instead of following the latest and greatest workout say a new workout craze comes out all your friends are doing it and they want you to do it. It might be good for you and it might not. So somebody who maybe doesn't have a strong foundation of core strength and balance and all their friends start going to a TRX class – I know a little light bulb might be going off in your head but I thought TRX strengths your core. Yes if you already have a certain foundation. So that's what our system does is it pairs the individual with the specific level that they should be at. So I recommend you taking kind of a “it depends” philosophy with exercise. It depends on a lot of factors. It depends on your exercise level, it depends on your ability, it depends on how long you've been exercising in the first place, how old you are, how intense you want to exercise – all those factors are going to come into play. Think of how many exercises there are – I mean I think in our database alone we have about 350 exercises and we really are very specialized. We don't do the whole gamut of exercises. I bet there are thousands and thousands of exercises.
So how do you pick the 15 to 20 exercises that are right for you? Well, it depends. Depends on a lot of factors that I just listed. So and again I'm doing a general podcast here so I'm not able to talk about specifics but I just want to encourage you to adopt that mindset that if your friends do come to you with this newest, latest, greatest thing that you go, maybe even go to the trainer or definitely go on Google first and just research who is this good for, look at the participants in the pictures that they show. You know if you are 60 years old and you haven't worked out in 10 years, 20 years, and on the website for whatever new latest, greatest workout you are looking at, on the website it shows a bunch of 20 year olds who have 4 percent body fat, then I don't know, I would be a little hesitant to do a workout like that. It doesn't seem like it would fit with where you are at that moment.
So just be aware and just be willing to ask questions. Be willing to do a little bit of research and find that level that is appropriate for you because again it depends, it depends on a lot of things namely age, ability, experience, all those different factors, how hard you want to work, all those things. So short podcast today, but that's what I highly recommend, make sure that your workout represents you and who you are at this time of your life and compared to what goals you want to achieve.
I'm doing a podcast a day and we don't want you to miss any of the action so subscribe on iTunes and we would love to hear your comments on Facebook as well. Looking forward to hearing from you.
